1. Improve Your Credit

3. Shop Around

Check out this post on WHERE to shop for car insurance.

4. Bundle Your Auto Policy with Home or Renters Insurance

5. Get Married

No, I know, it’s the WRONG reason to marry, but it can save you money! I know, it’s absolutely ridiculous to think being married would make someone a better driver, but if you are planning on getting married, don’t wait to update your policy. Your wallet with thank you!

6. Get the Discounts You’re Entitled To

  • Anti-Lock Brake Discount
  • Anti-Theft Discount/Passive Disabling
  • Claims/Violation Free Discount
  • Multi-Car Discount
  • Multi-Policy Discount
  • Passive Restraint Discounts it may be for Dual Airbags or Multiple Airbags (let your insurance broker help you find the right discounts)
  • Reduced Usage Discount and/or low mileage discount
  • Safe Driver Discount

7. Move to the next town over

I know it sounds CRAZY to move just to save money on car insurance, but here me out first. If you don’t own your home and are renting, find out which zip codes are the cheaper zip codes to insure. You’d be amazed how moving just a few miles down the road can change your overall quote.

8. Increase Your Deductible

9. Consider usage-based insurance

  • Pay-Per-Mile
  • Write a “Lay-up” into the policy. If you have a car that you only drive certain months out of the year, some insurers let you pause coverage for up to 3 months at a time. For example, don’t drive your hot rod in winter months and you keep it tucked away in your garage or a storage unit? Only pay for 9 months for that vehicle and see the savings in your overall quote.

10. Don’t Pay For Coverage You Don’t Need

11. Pay Your Bill in Full

12. Drive a car that’s cheap to insure

Consider Insurance Costs Before You Choose a Car

Things to remember:

If a driver is not a resident relative as defined in your policy, coverages, benefits and rights may be limited.
